What are BCN, BOXN, NMG Rake, Hopper Wagons? What are they used for?
The Car in the railway system that is used for the transportation of goods or animals is called Wagons.
Different types of wagons that are used in Indian Railways are:
- BCN type: BCN stands for Bogie Covered Wagon with Pneumatic brakes. These are generally used for transportation of goods such as food grains, concrete, etc, that get perished in rain easily.
- BOXN type: Bogie Open Wagon with Pneumatic brakes, often abbreviated as BOXN, is used for transportation of coal and, carrying of iron ore for its extraction to different steel plants. These are those products that do not get affected by rain.
- BTPN type: BTPN types of wagons are used for transportation of liquid or liquified materials, here 'P' indicates petrol. Here BTPN stands for Bogie Oil tank wagon for Petrol with Pneumatic brakes. For transportation of other commodities, different wagons with different codes are used.
- BOB type: BOB stands for Bogie Open Wagon Hopper, or also called Hopper. They are often used for discharging ballast along the railway track and also for discharging coals at thermal power stations. It features eight to twelve underside doors.
- BLC type: BLC stands for Bogie Low Platform Container wagon. It has a flat surface with several locking levers to keep the containers intact.
- BRN type: Broad Gauge Bogie Rail Wagon abbreviated as BRN or also known as Flat Wagon, is generally used by the Konkan railways to reduce the traffic on roads and also the pollution, with the practice of the Ro-Ro technique. It is also used by the Armed forces for transportation of their equipment, vehicle, etc.
- NMG Rake type: These are old Passenger carrying coaches that are Converted into goods wagons after retirement. General they are 21 years old, that's why they are known as New Modified Goods Wagon that is abbreviated as NMG Rake. They are used for carrying different vehicles such as cars tractors etc.
